The snow just keeps rolling in – Hochsolden, 5th March 2009

The endless winter continues up at Hochsolden with light snow over the last few days and heavy snow forecast for the coming days. I have been up in Hochsolden skiing with a corporate group from L’oreal and their clients – great skiers and even better people, although I have been kept in the bar too late too often :(

The light was mixed but there were some periods of clear skies and the skiing above the clouds yesterday on the Teifenbach Glacier was superb with outstanding snow and wide, crowd free pistes.

Mate , as your with the people from L’oreal , see if they can get you some hair products! the last time we saw you, it was all over the place. Still, i have to envy the tough job you do on the slopes & in the bar.

  2. mat

I have to confess that the hair has been a disappointment for some time now, although surely more of a disappointment for Mrs Brown who sees it daily. The days up in Hochsolden were pretty tough ones, various members of the group accosted me each night and sleep was a rarity. Great bunch there though even though I would hardly describe the week as salubrious. As far as I know there are storm clouds on the horizon later this month as well – will I ever be free?

  3. John Murray

Freedom comes at a price Matt, & i don’t think all your dues will be paid up until the end of the season. Looking forward to seeing the Mop on impending visit so we can compare with previous photos of grunge rocker look.

I have to say that the most hurtful and possibly unjustified criticism of my current hair style was that it was initiated by Danny. The difference between my admittedly unkempt style and his tonsure is that mine needs scissors in the hand of a professional, Danny requires an Elton John type transformation. I will add that despite some of his dubious behaviour in Kitzbuhel the reference to Sir Elton purely relates to their respective hair needs.

unfortunately i can’t really join your conversation about hair products. john – i heard you are coming to the skigloo sometime in march. i am looking forward to meeting you. don’t forget the dice!

  6. mat

There is a great ski-out from the skigloo that should be an ideal exit route following a few rolls of the dice. There is still plenty of snow up there and conditions are set to become colder with a good deal of snow over the coming week – bring on the dice man!

  7. John

commeth the hour… you know the rest. Can’t play today, very busy & i also expect the Skig-loo to have the appropriate building certificates.

  8. mat

….commeth the hour, commeth the austrianlocal. The skigloo will be solid for your visit, I cannot guarantee any solidity of legs or mind though. There is quite a lot of interest in your latest ski holiday – I am assuming that those who are keen to meet the dice man will be doing so for the first time.

Matt, you are quite right in your likening Dan’s hair to Elton’s but as you and John know from your night spent together, he does have hair elsewhere on his body for use in the transplant.

  10. mat

Hey Cathy, I am trying the Bryn West (G&S) approach to that awful morning when I walked through that hotel room in Kitzbuhel :)

  11. Cathy Hawkes

If I remember Bryn said “It was cold and we needed body heat” so now you have me worried!

  12. mat

Terrible thought :( It has been so cold recently, I was in Ischgl on Saturday and it was bitterly cold at this crazy race – http://www.ineedsnow.com/blog/mass-start-frejns-freeride-inferno-ischgl/. To be honest there was a real mix of racers, some were absolutely flying, other should have been back on the ski pistes. They had quite a party afterwards as well.

I am getting a little concerned about all the hype concerning David Beckham’s return to the Bentley Dealership (code). I was promised a ‘romantic’ long week-end skiing around Innsbruck. I have the feeling I’ve been duped!

  14. mat

Hi Terri, I was wondering how the trip to Innsbruck was sold to you, I hear the alternative was a long weekend in Verbier? For me there is absolutely no competition – Innsbruck has great skiing on all sides of the city, you can ski all year round on the Stubai Glacier, locals keep a real balance to the place and I would guess a glass of beer would be about a quarter of the price in Innsbruck compared to Verbier. I am assuming that the accompanying dice will not be used to select a high end gift from one of the many exclusive shops in Innsbruck, rather to wreak havoc on those for who the dice falls unkindly. I am just starting to feel more human after the corporate ski trip to Hochsolden that I guided, I really hope you can persuade the dice man of the merits of candles and quality food – I fear not though :)

  15. John Murray

Matt, i appreciate the mention of “high end gift”, however if you could refrain form encouraging ( as it is really not necessary). El Tel has no trouble in flashing the plastic around the shops. Another smart move to stay on the mountain itself. Rest assured the dice will be coming. Tel has not been duped as i can combine the dice with romance & the only time she has had trouble with someone pulling the wool over her eyes is a with a cashmere jumper that doesn’t fit.

  16. mat

Sorry, it was a bit clumsy, especially from a man whose notion of a romantic meal is a beer and soup in a mountain hut. Overjoyed to hear that the dice are Innsbruck-bound, I am sure that regional productivity will show precipitous declines during your visit. It has been snowing all week on and off – the conditions really are superb. I have not been to the skigloo for some time but rest assured that it will be fit to host you guys in a couple of weeks. Maybe we can have an inaugural roll of the dice in there?

  17. John Murray

Not on the slopes young fella! saftey first on the mountain!!

  18. mat

hmmmm, wisdom I predict that will fail to accompany you to the skigloo??????

  19. Terri

How do you plan to get enough refreshments up to the skigloo to accommodate a game of dice?

  20. mat

Well based on the opening party then we should have sufficient up there to take care of the crazed kiwi. I have still yet to inspect the Skigloo for a few weeks now as I have been so busy visiting other resorts. I plan to go up there this weekend briefly to assess the structure. Rest assured that refreshments will be adequate for all eventualities, even bad rolls of the dice.

  21. Terri

If the skigloo is out of action, we might have to call off the ‘romantic’ weekend. Anticipation for visiting the skigloo is out of all proportion. If we get there and find out its structurally unsafe, you could see a grown man cry!

  22. mat

    Hi Terri

The Skigloo suffered some structural damage after the opening party but rest assured it will be the back to its finest best for your visit – I will provide photographic and video evidence of its sound structure in the coming days. To be honest I have not been back since that fateful opening as I have been so busy but I may take a trip up tomorrow morning and assess it. I have complete confidence in it despite any small remedial work that may be required. I will be sure to give a Skigloo update. Tell John to hold back on the kleenex.

  23. John Murray

Matt & Terri ! lets get this straight from the start. I’m going on a romantic ski break with my wonderful wife who won’t want to do any shopping. Whilst on this break it would be wonderful to visit the Skig-loo to see the construction of what sent Matt to the Hospital for the fruits of his labour. I must insist, been the sensible one of the group, that the dice are not for the slopes. I’m sure we have all seen the adverts ( alcohol makes you think you’re invincible ).However i would love a beer at the Skig-loo to wet the appetite for further festivities at the bottom of the slopes.

  24. mat

Terri, it seems that there is someone posing as John on the blog, he is doing a good if not entirely perfect job of imitation. I was alerted to this identity manipulation from the following lines ascribed to John:

    “I’m going on a romantic ski break…”
“I must insist, been the sensible one of the group…”

I think you would share my concern? And John, if you are out there and can read this, know that we all care about you and we have people looking for you right now – you will be soon free of your captives.

  25. Terri

Good spot Mat! However, maybe I should keep fake John, seeing he is both sensible and romantic. There’s an off chance he could be rich too!

  26. mat

Well I am not sure he could make money from a casino, he is the first person I have met who smiles when the dice roll badly :)
