Anonymous Lizum – the locals’ hangout in Innsbruck

So after weeks of high alpine glacier skiing dating back to early October on the Stubai Glacier, the real action starts over here in Austria at Axamer Lizum. Never heard of it? It is the highest resort located around Innsbruck, has a loyal following of Innsbruck locals and some incredible off-piste. This time of the year it can be pretty cold up there but as my local hill, with a piste right back to my apartment – it has to be my favourite ski area in Europe. It is not for everyone and not the best for beginners but yes I rate it very highly. Back later with some pics and some stories of ski instructor misadventures over the summer.

St Anton opens – its official, winter is here!

So St Anton am Arlberg is set to open over the weekend with a program of events that start this evening:

Photo exhibition by Joseph Mallaun followed by an extreme mountaineering presentation featuring Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner

Ski workshops and the bib draw for the giant slalom race, opening of the ski lounge and more movies, giant slalom race.

The St Anton am Arlberg Rallye

Anyone familiar with the resort will readily understand that mixed in with the genuine Alpinism will be a ‘healthy’ provision of après ski, even for those not skiing.

latest winter 08 snow in innsbruck

So after a 7 weeks of glacier skiing the winter has arrived as far down as Innsbruck. The snow level is currently 1400m and set to fall throughout the evening with snow fall down to Innsbruck (575m) scheduled all day Saturday and through to Monday. Tuesday is set to be colder and clearer. My local hill Axamer Lizum has it lower slopes covered to just above my apartment in Gotzens.

Solden winter 08 FIS race weekend and season opening

One of the very best events of the winter season is upon us, the season opener at Solden, on the Solden Glacier. There is an FIS race weekend to start the traditional race calendar and the usual apres ski mayhem of Solden later in the day. The race program is as as follows:
