New snow in Gerlos

Spring has been here in Austria for the last few weeks but temperatures have dropped again and my weekend in Gerlos has seen 2 consecutive snowy mornings and whilst the snow has been heavy late in the day at resort level the snow at the top sections of the Zillertal Arena has been powder. Just back from skiing in Gerlos and scored a major powder day. The sun was intermittent but the visibility was good for almost all the day and the snow was sensational. There was so much un-tracked powder just next to the pistes and lifts it was bewildering. Maybe there were better secret stashes on offer for the locals but from what I could see there was several days good powder skiing lying in wait for anyone wanting it. Great day!

Zell am Ziller opens with powder – 10/12/09

The easiest way into the best Zillertal skiing – Zell am Ziller opened today with powder on offer and few crowds. Underneath superb skies of snow clouds and shafts of clear blue the snow conditions were excellent on and off-piste and due to the mid-week opening of Zell am Ziller there were few on or off the slopes. The links into the other Zillertal Arena ski areas are opening on Saturday and there should be some really excellent conditions. Snow was coming today in the Zillertal Arena just before I skied down and more snow is set for the coming days with very low temperatures into next week. Gerlos, a neighbour in the Zillertal Arena is set to host a big opening party tomorrow with DJ Moped set for centre stage – I will be there to see this epic performance.

Zillertal Arena – opening day you’ll find me there

It has been a great glacier skiing season this autumn, certainly the best conditions in the whole of the Alps on the Austrian glaciers and at times as good as any recent years. Painful as it is I have yet to score a powder day – I have friends in Innsbruck who have already got several under their belt. Not to worry, as soon as it opens I will be heading to the Zillertal Arena for some remedial action – I have only discovered this region over the last couple of seasons, with so much skiing in the Zillertal Valley I found it easy to stick with what I knew and always bypassed the Zillertal Arena. No more, this area is without doubt one of the very best ski region in the Alps. It has height, skiing to over 2500m, it has vertical, almost 2km above Zell am Ziller, great ski-in, ski-out resort living in Konigsleiten and for those needing après ski then Gerlos is the place to be. As soon as the Zillertal Arena opens then I am heading there and when I make that 2km descent down to Zell am Ziller I am going to thinking of sipping a Zillertaler Beer, metres from the brewery.

Whilst the rest of the Alps were in Autumnal mood, these hard core boarders were walking for their turns in Gerlos, a resort in the Zillertal Arena. I was their to shoot some images of the resorts of the Zillertal Arena and saw these guys waste deep in snow trudging up the back of a dam. I am not sure of the legality of it all but the turns they had were well worth any repercussions – awesome conditions!

Zillertal Arena – perfect intermediate skiing 26th December

Whilst conditions today were certain to favour the Zillertal Arena with cold and clear skies, there is no doubt that the ski region is one of the very best in Europe for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. It is high, varied and extensive, not just in terms of densely packed ski pistes but instead it reaches right out from Zell am Ziller to Hochkrimml. The resorts of Konigsleiten and Hochkrimml also offer something of a rarity in Austria, ski-in, ski-out, chalet accommodation resorts and fortunately not a single building is large or overpowering. For beginners the Hochkrimml area is ideal with wide and gentle slopes whilst Konigsleiten has a huge area of off-piste to explore. I skied all 4 regions of the Zillertal Arena today starting from Gerlos and whilst most of the Alps are enjoying a sensational Christmas period, the conditions in the Zillertal Arena today were really incredible. The highlight of the day was the region around the Wilde Krimml where the Zell am Ziller and Gerlos ski areas meet. There are several flat sections in this long connecting ski route but there was some great powder and the scenery was as good as I have seen. If you haven’t been to the Zillertal Arena, then go!

Latest – cold but incredible skiing in the Tirol

So the cold weather continued but clear blue skies that not been predicted in the Tirol arrived to offer really outstanding conditions. I was in the Zillertal and spent some time capturing shots of a group of snowboarders who were riding perfect powder down the back of the Durlassoden Dam, between the resorts of Gerlos and Konigsleiten. The resorts were closed but these guys as well as a number of ski tourers had incredible conditions.

They had to walk for their turns but it was a great and untracked backside of the dam

All the glaciers were open as was Obergurgl where my brother-in-law went. He reports outstanding conditions, but also very cold. Not too many people either.
