Axamer Lizum – Schlick 2000 ski link a step closer

Following a council meeting in the Stubai village of Telfes yesterday evening, a majority of the votes are now in favour of proceeding with ski lift connection between Axamer Lizum and Schlick 2000. The combined area would eventually bring together Mutters, Gotzens, Axamer Lizum and Schlick 2000 and complete the biggest ski region in the Innsbruck region. According to locals the project to link the Axamer Lizum and Schlick 2000 ski areas has been under discussion 20 years and deep divisions have existed between the towns of the Stubai valley as to whether to link into the Axamer Lizum ski region. The vote paves the way toward the start of the consultation and financing of the project.

Cold and clear in Schlick 2000 – Stubai Valley

Just back from Schlick 2000, the main ski area at the head of the Stubai valley and served by the ski holiday resort of Fulpmes. I have skied here many times and never fail to marvel at the superb scenery, with all ski pistes and routes heading back to the valley floor of a huge rock bowl. The skiing is ideal for beginners and early intermediates but off-piste is also very good for the better skiers and snowboarders. Today had superb weather, very cold and clear with the pistes in great shape and far less crowded than last week. No new snow is forecast for the coming days, with very cold and clear conditions forecast.

Good snow – poor light, Schlick 2000, Innsbruck

With what seems to have been light snow each day this last week around Innsbruck and further snow over night, the snow cover in the Innsbruck region resorts is excellent. Today I dropped in on Schlick 2000, a resort connected to Innsbruck by tram and part of the Stubai Valley region. The area is compact, features superb scenery and offers great skiing for beginners and some excellent off-piste for those wanting to seek it out. It is not ideal for intermediates(they need to head down the valley to the Stubai Glacier for some of the best intermediate skiing to be found in Austria). The snow conditions were good with skiing right back to the resort. The skies were less welcoming however and with hazy skies and flat light. There were a good number of people there which should take some of the strain off the Stubai Glacier. Those at Schlick 2000 were treated to an après ski festival after the lifts closed featuring a Super Tramp cover band from Germany – quality stuff!
