Innsbruck delivers another top powder day

After several days of great skiing around Innsbruck, Axamer Lizum delivered another great powder day, this time under blue skies. With around 20cm of new snow that banked in places, adding to the already impressive off-piste then conditions for early December were excellent. There were few people on the mid-week slopes and so many fresh tracks to be had. Snow is set for the rest of the week and after a cold and reasonably clear weekend the snow is set to return early next week.

The clouds clear after several days of snow in Innsbruck to give great powder skiing

Axamer Lizum, Innsbruck served up some great powder skiing today, with clear skies and clouds down in the valley. Views along the Innsbruck valley suggested that the great conditions were available in most ski areas in Tirol with the cloud lingering around 1500m. The break in the weather seems to be just that with the cloud and snow set to return tomorrow and last well into next week. Great for the ski resorts but less good for the organisers of the Hahnenkamm race weekend which is set to have a lot of snow to clear from the course over the next few days.

Bregenzerwald – one of the best kept secrets in the Alps

With snow records for the accumulation in both a resort and a ski area that tops Europe, a stunning, stylish and authentic way of living and one of the best welcomes in the Alps – Bregenzerwald really does have it all. The snow record is staggering; I skied in a large ski area this weekend in Bregenzerwald and there was not a snow cannon in sight. The top lifts are not high by some standards but the amount of natural snow the Bregenzerwald ski resorts get make them top of the Alps in snow accumulation charts. The villages are truly immaculate, we stayed in Au and there was a really unique feel to the resorts and their architecture. They are not Swiss in feel, nor traditional Austrian but consist of immaculate small units blending old and modern in a fantastic style. And the welcome we got was great and universal, ‘guten tag’ from all staff and locals we met and when I returned to a chair lift later in the day today, the lifty who had given me a piste map some hours earlier had a wave for me from his office.

Après ski in Bregenzerwald is tame compared to some Austrian resorts, whilst those wanting huge lift linked areas can find better options. But if you need snow for scenery, to learn on or to charge through off-piste Bregenzerwald is hard to beat. If you need top quality accommodation in unassuming and immaculate villages then go to Bregenzerwald. And to top it all in these hard times, a 500ml glass of beer was just €3,10 in the local bars. One plug – the staff, the food and the accommodation at the Hotel Adler in Au were really outstanding.

For the ‘Powder Hound’ with a week off work and in need of powder. The search is powered by live weather data to allow a user to find all resorts near an airport that have snow forecast in the following week, sorted in descending order of distance.

Snow next month – good existing snow
Designed for the ‘mid season booker’ who are flying into a regional alpine airport and want resorts with good snow depths. The snow search allows the user to find the resorts with the best snow depth in the region around the airport.

Snow next year – high resorts / high lifts
For the ‘early bird’ booker who wants to book in advance and need either a high resort or high altitude lifts to ensure good snow.

Winter rolls on in Innsbruck

So the winter continues here in Austria with heavy snow over night down to around 700m on the mountains to the south of Innsbruck. The rest of the week is set to have light snow and sun, whilst the weekend is due to be cold with more snow. Great weather today here in Innsbruck with clear skies and white mountains on all sides and to make you all less jealous, I am in the office all day and can only gaze out at the incredible scenery.

Latest – cold but incredible skiing in the Tirol

So the cold weather continued but clear blue skies that not been predicted in the Tirol arrived to offer really outstanding conditions. I was in the Zillertal and spent some time capturing shots of a group of snowboarders who were riding perfect powder down the back of the Durlassoden Dam, between the resorts of Gerlos and Konigsleiten. The resorts were closed but these guys as well as a number of ski tourers had incredible conditions.

They had to walk for their turns but it was a great and untracked backside of the dam

All the glaciers were open as was Obergurgl where my brother-in-law went. He reports outstanding conditions, but also very cold. Not too many people either.

Snow down to Innsbruck

So snow all the way down to Innsbruck and heavy snowfall across all the surrounding mountains. The strong winds and low visibility make ski conditions not ideal, especially with temps down to -21c on the glaciers (then factor in the wind chill). Many Innsbruckers today ventured to the Christmas markets instead of the mountains.

So after a 7 weeks of glacier skiing the winter has arrived as far down as Innsbruck. The snow level is currently 1400m and set to fall throughout the evening with snow fall down to Innsbruck (575m) scheduled all day Saturday and through to Monday. Tuesday is set to be colder and clearer. My local hill Axamer Lizum has it lower slopes covered to just above my apartment in Gotzens.

Latest Pitztal Glacier – powder skiing again

It was May 08 when I had my best powder day of the winter in Austria on the Pitztal Glacier. November served another superb powder day over the weekend although the off-piste terrain is more limited by the gaping crevasses that are very evident on the edges of the ski area. There were plenty of powder lines and for those sticking to the pistes there were excellent conditions as well.

Latest snow conditions from the Kaunertal Glacier

The snowboard epicentre of the Tirol Oberland, the Kaunertal Glacier had great conditions over the last week and this weekend was no different. New snow and clear skies gave some excellent conditions. The run back to the base station car park is still being prepared but the entire main glacier area is open and it is possible to ski down to the chair lift mid-station beyond the glacier.
