The Stubai Glacier, Hintertux Glacier, Otztal Glacier or the Pitztal Glacier all are accessed from Innsbruck. High altitude skiing in France includes Chamonix, Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d'Huez and Val d'Isere / Tignes. In Switzerland opt for Zermatt or Saas Fee.

Austria is the undisputed king of après ski with Solden arguably the best. Ischgl, St Anton and Mayrhofen are close behind. In France go for Val d'Isere, Morzine or Meribel, whilst Pas de la Casa, Sauze d'Oulx and Whistler can guarantee that you'll never see the queue for the first gondola. Prices vary: Austria and Andorra offers broadly good value, France less so.

SECRET SPOTS: BRAGGING RIGHTS

secret ski spots

There is little better than having one up on a skiing or snowboarding acquaintance. Resorts that offer you ‘bragging rights’ are Stuben am Arlberg, Austria, a ski resort which accesses the St Anton ski area and has above it the best off-piste in Austria. Sainte Foy, France is the place to head when it snows in Val d'Isere. Serfaus is almost unknown yet outstanding.
