Galtur, Austria ski holiday resort guide. Galtur is the highest ski holiday resort in the Paznaun valley ski region. Galtur is relaxed and family friendly and has a good range of resort facilities.

GALTUR THE RESORT
Located at the head of the Paznaun valley Galtur has a dramatic location. The valley is fairly wide but towering mountains dominate Galtur and the tree-less mountainsides give an impressive and stark feel. Galtur by contrast is an authentic ski holiday village that is low rise with the usual domed Austrian church at its centre. The Silvretta Pass that links the Paznaun valley to the Montafon ski region is closed throughout the winter and Galtur is the last stop on the road. This ensures that all traffic is local and therefore light. Facilities are reasonably good in Galtur and there are numerous impressive hotels in the resort. Galtur tends to be one of the smarter ski holiday resorts in the region, although prices tend to be broadly reasonable.
THE GOOD, THE BAD
We like:
Attractive, low rise resort with access to both the Galtur and Ischgl ski areas
We don`t like:
Galtur is 2km from the ski lifts, the Wirl area of Galtur is ski-in, ski-out

GALTUR RESORT INFORMATION
The ski holiday resort of Galtur is not actually located next to the ski slopes; it is some 2km form the centre of the resort to the ski lifts. However the hamlet of Wirl, essentially part of the resort of Galtur is the location offering slope-side accommodation and facilities. There are 2 main lifts leaving Wirl into the Galtur ski area and much of the accommodation in Wirl is either ski-in, ski-out or just a few metres from the lifts and slopes. Ski buses from Galtur to Wirl operate continuously so the dislocation is not actually so much of a hindrance. Galtur features an Alpine museum and has commemorations of the avalanche disaster which struck the resort in 1999.
