THE SKIING IN KITZBUHEL
Aside from the ski piste that forms the Kitzbuhel Hahnenkamm ski race, much of the ski area at Kitzbuhel is well suited to the intermediate skier or boarder. The area is large and interesting the way if fans out from the Hahnenkammbahn lift station. But for the precipitous drops of the FIS Kitzbuhel Hahnenkamm ski piste, the area around the Hahnenkammbahn is fairly flat. For snowboarders this means a walk to get to the section of the track which is steep enough for descent. Most of the runs in this section of the Kitzbuhel ski area tend to be red or blue, and whilst Kitzbuhel is a popular ski destination there are plenty of kms of ski pistes to disperse the skiers and boarders.
THE GOOD, THE BAD
We like:
Extensive skiing for intermediates. Ski safaris.
We don`t like:
Flat connecting sections not ideal for boarders.

KITZBUHEL LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Local - Heath Judson - 15 yrs skiing Kitzbuhel
Heath works here - www.etz.at
The best expert ski piste?
‘Challenging is the Diretissima top to bottom or Hochsaukaser (especially when lower section is open!) or over at Pass Thurn the Zweitausender.’
KITZBUHEL LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Which skis and where for ski carving?
‘For a good cruisy Red like Maierl 1, Brunnenfeld or Resterkogel I’d take an Atomic Drive9 or Fischer Fuseand for ladies a K2 oneluv.’
On + off-piste, what ski would you use?
‘As in this region you can go from Champagne powder to Icy home runs in a day, a ski like the Magma from Elanor the Salomon Tornado cover the best of both worlds.’
Your favourite off-piste area?
‘Bichlalm, virtually deserted with loads of variety, take a guide for the best days.’
KITZBUHEL LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

The best beginner ski piste?
‘The Horn, you can take the lift down from the Alpenhaus to the beginner bowl or Sonnrast at the top of the Fleckalmbahn.’
Your favourite mountain hut?
‘There are several as the area is so large, Mölkalm on the Hahnenkamm side has service and is great for a relaxing lunch, Barenbad in Jochberg is a wonder to behold, very new but made old. And the Hornkoplhutte on the Horn, just off the beaten tracks.’
The best intermediate ski piste?
‘Maierl top to bottom, long, wide and fun. Hartkaser at Pass Thurn or the Horn if a mixed ability group.’
KITZBUHEL LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Ice - how to avoid and what to ski on?
‘If staying around the Hahnenkamm side a slalom carver or cross ski works well, Head super shape or Atomic SL12. Zweitausander and the Horn are better when iced out.’
Your favourite après ski bar?
‘Personally, the Londoner if someone else is buying, Pavillion if I feel like dancing on the tables.’
The best après ski drink for tired ski legs?
‘Blackies Special, Gletschereis and Red bull in a whiskey glass!’
KITZBUHEL SKIING
On the other side of the valley from Kitzbuhel Hahnenkamm is the Kitzbuheler Horn ski area. This is popular snowboarders and sun worshippers but the snow does tend to deteriorate before the main ski area. Beyond the Hahnekamm and the Kitzbuheler Horn area, the Kitzbuheler Alpen stretches out to include resorts such as Westendorf, Soll, Ellmau, Alpbach and the resorts of Wildschonau. These resorts and more are included in the Kitzbuheler Alpen ski pass.
