Pretty resorts very well geared to tourism, but heavy traffic can spoil the atmosphere and slightly more expensive than other ski regions in Austria.

MONTAFON THE RESORTS

The villages in Montafon are spread along a 39km valley and vary between the bigger villages at the head of the resort which have a local population and the ski holiday resorts that are located deeper down the valley. Exceptions exist but generally the village of Schruns typifies the village with a good proportion of locals, whilst Gargellen is a stand alone ski holiday resort with excellent access to the ski slopes and whilst attractive and traditional, Gargellen serves the tourism industry and little more. Schruns is the destination of the main railway line into Montafon and has a good deal of facilities that cater for the locals. For those wanting good access to a nearby ski hill, then Schruns is a good option.

THE GOOD, THE BAD

Good  We like:
All are low rise. Schruns is the most authentic, Gargellen is slope-side.

Bad  We don`t like:
Heavy traffic through the villages at peak times and some villages detached from the ski lifts / pistes.

MONTAFON RESORT INFORMATION

St Anton in Montafon, Vandans, Bartholomaberg, Tschagguns and Silbertal are the other villages that are located at the head of valley in the Montafon region, with St Anton in Montafon, Vandans, and Tschagguns being reasonably sized villages. Bartholomaberg and Silbertal are smaller villages that access ski and winter walking areas. Gargellen has great access to its own ski area whilst St Gallenkirch, Gortipohl, Gaschurn and Partenen have access (direct or reasonably close) to the Silvretta Nova ski region, widely regarded as the best and certainly the biggest ski area in Montafon. There is almost no high rise or over development in the entire region and the superb scenery is generally well complemented by the ski holiday resorts.
