OBERGURGL THE RESORT

Both Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are smart, upmarket villages although they lack the stuffy air of other upmarket resorts. Quality hotels are abundant and the fact that the main road through the Otztal Valley goes no further than Obergurgl, means the resort is fairly free of traffic. Three lifts leave the valley, 2 from Obergurgl which access the Festkogl and one from Untergurgl, just down the valley which reaches up into the ski area around Hochgurgl and the Wurmkogl. Access to the accommodation from the slopes and vice versa in Hochgurgl is superb whilst a long blue piste / track runs the length of Obergurgl and provides many stop off points from which to return to accommodation. Facilities in Obergurgl far outnumber the much smaller Hochgurgl.

OBERGURGL RESORT INFORMATION

Both Obergurgl and Hochgurgl have a number of impressive hotels which make up the bulk of resort facilities. Shops and restaurants are numerous in Obergurgl whilst Hochgurgl has little outside of the hotels and accommodation there. Hochgurgl instead relies on its superb access to the slopes and its dramatic location. The atmosphere is quiet after a couple of civilised après ski hours in both resorts but there are more options in the evening in Obergurgl down in the valley.

Charming Tyrollian village. Quite a small resort - but enough to keep families occupied. Mostly hotels so not sure about chalet / apartment scene.
Excellent little bar (Fassl Bar) in shape of big barrel at bottom of ski school meeting area - must qualify as one of the smallets pubs in Europe.

Everything quite pricy partly because of FX rate and partly beacuse it is right at the head of the valley.
