OBERTAUERN THE RESORT
Obertauern is rare in Austria as it is a renowned resort that has been purpose built. The high mountain pass that is the location of Obertauern had little beforehand other than a cluster of farming community buildings. The resort was developed due to its advantageous altitude and the great snow record of Obertauern has ensured that is a popular destination south of Salzburg. The village is drawn out along the main road / mountain pass and whilst this is not typical of Austrian alpine villages, Obertauern has been developed in a traditional Austrian alpine style. It is also one of the key advantages when accessing the ski lifts. Numerous ski lifts leave Obertauern and they do so at various points ensuring that most accommodation is in reach of a nearby lift.
THE GOOD, THE BAD

OBERTAUERN RESORT INFORMATION
Obertauern tends to lack the central charm of other Austrian mountain resorts. The centre is attractive enough but whereas other Austrian resorts have evolved over time, Obertauern seems to missing the real Austrian feel. Hotels and facilities are immaculate in Obertauern but just as the resort of Kuhtai is set high on a mountain pass between and seems to exist with the bare minimum of facilities and building that it needs to function, then so does Obertauern. Obertauern is bigger and better equipped than Kuhtai but similarly has the feeling that if it were not for skiing then the resort would not exist and for this reason the feel of the place (despite its attractive architecture) is strangely un-Austrian.
