Ok….the Krippenstein Freeride Arena is incredible for off-piste skiing, snowboarders have some traverses before they reach the off-piste treasure and the terrain park is very natural and unusual. For the best skiers and snowboarders then the Krippenstein Freeride Arena is an absolute must. Intermediates have a good run back to Obertraun but nothing else and beginners some great views. Intermediates and beginners should commute to Dachstein West which is ideal for them.

OBERTRAUN - KRIPPENSTEIN SKI HOLIDAYS

One of the few elite centres of back-country, off-piste extreme skiing in the Alps. The Krippenstein Freeride Arena has few lifts, limited on-piste skiing and little celebrity about it. But for serious skiers and snowboarders then the Krippenstein Freeride Arena has to be on the very short list of mountains to visit in the Alps. Guides are absolutely essential away from the pistes but the very steep and varied terrain, regular banks of powder and the quality of the alpinists that inhabit this mountain outpost make it amongst the few truly hardcore ski areas in the Alps. The area slightly favours the skier as there are some lengthy traverses before the walls of powder. The resort of Obertraun accesses this hardcore gem.

Rustic and very authentic, Obertraun is no Kitzbuhel in terms of facilities but has a unique and fantastic charm

Quiet and few cars but also few facilities. For families wanting a real piece of Austrian mountain life then Obertraun is ideal. The Dachstein West ski area offers great family skiing just down the road.

Conversations with real alpinists rather than dancing with strangers, if you need umbrella bars then they are available at Gosau and the Dachstein West ski region
