OBERTRAUN SKI HOLIDAYS

Obertraun is the lakeside resort that accesses the impressive off-piste ski region of Krippenstein. Located between an alpine lake and regional glaciers, the setting is superb, as is the ‘Krippenstein Freesports Arena’ home to an avid following of off-piste skiers and snowboarders. On-piste, Krippenstein offers only a compact ski area although it does feature the longest downhill run in the region. The fact is though that the 11km of ski pistes are dwarfed by the more than 30km of recognised off-piste trails - Krippenstein is very much an off-piste arena. 3 cable cars connect to form a circuit around the main ski area, offering the option of various launching points for the off-piste routes.

The Krippenstein ski area greatly favours off-piste skiing and snowboarding and for skiers and snowboarders with some basic experience behind them, then Krippenstein will offer little terrain to explore. Beginners have a nursery area located at the Bergstation top lift point and a lengthy blue piste to progress into. For intermediate skiers and boarders staying in Obertraun then the nearby ski region of Dachstein West is the best option. Featuring ski holiday resorts such as Gosau, the Dachstein West region has a series of connected ski villages that spreads across the valleys of the area. Intermediate skiing is very much in the ascendance in the Dachstein West ski region.
