PITZTAL GLACIER SKIING

The Pitztal Glacier is one of the leading glacier skiing areas in Austria and features a good sized ski area with some recently upgraded lifts. The skiing takes place in a large glacial bowl with wide and long runs, whilst during the winter the snow conditions can be superb. Much of the ski area on the Pitztal Glacier is suited to intermediate skiers although there are a couple of steep (unusual for glacier areas) sections of piste which attract national teams for pre-season race training. The Pitztal Glacier is also the launch pad for the ‘short cut’ route to the Wildspitze, the highest peak in Tirol. Views over to it are spectacular and ski tourers form trails like ants in the far distance as they cross the neighbouring glaciers to access the peak.

PITZTAL GLACIER SKI INFORMATION

The Pitztal Glacier has a superb snow record, stunning views and a recently upgraded ski lift system. The Pitztal Glacier however lags behind some of the other glacier skiing areas in Austria as it does not offer a ski out option, instead all visitors are required to download on the funicular back to the base station. In 2007 a new ski out route was demanded by authorities overseeing the safety of the Austrian ski areas. The route was to be used in case of evacuation of the Pitztal Glacier ski area. That though is the only ski out on offer at the Pitztal Glacier.

The Pitztaler Glacier has become more and more popular in the past years. It can be easily reached and even after heavy snowfall, the streets should be free. A big advantage for the "Pitztaler" compared to its neighbour, the Kaunertaler Glacier. But especially on weekends in the early season the Pitzaler can be very crowded and maybe you have to wait for a while before accessing it by the Pitz Panorama Bahn. The Wildspitze ist one of the highest mountains of Austria and is an amazing skitour, which starts on this glacier.
