Limited but dedicated beginners ski area in Stuben. Great for intermediates with immediate access into the St Anton ski area. The pinnacle of off-piste skiing in Austria!

STUBEN SKIING

The Arlberg ski area above St Anton is rightly regarded as the best ski area in Austria. It is extensive, has a superb and highly modern ski lift system and offers the best advanced ski terrain the whole of Austria. This popularity has created huge demannd and whilst the lift system is continually upgraded there are major bottle-necks. This is where Stuben really come into its own. The main ski lift out of Stuben to the Albona middle station offers a ski piste down to the furthest reach of the St Anton ski area. Descend the ski piste, cross the road via the skiable bridge and jump on the lift. Skiers and boarders are in the heart of the St Anton ski whilst guests in St Anton are still queuing. At the end of the day a piste takes guests right back to Stuben without the carnage of some of the lower slopes in St Anton.

STUBEN SKI INFORMATION

For off-piste skiing then Stuben is one of the best in the area and therefore Austria. Some of the terrain requires a hike from the lifts and a local guide is highly recommended for anything off the beaten track, but above Stuben are endless routes and chutes that given the superb snow record of the region, often means excellent powder skiing in an area that is little known compared to its famous neighbours.

Stuben village is small and neatly compact, with easy access to the slopes, it is often quicker to access the slopes of St Anton via Stuben, in preference to battling the masses in St Anton itself! A newer and faster chairlift in Stuben, would be an improvement, which I hope the piste managers will note. It can be very cold in January, as the chairlift from Stuben is in a shaded bowl, to the extent you are offered blankets by the chairlift attendants, before commencing your journey, so be warned !!!!!!!!!!!!

Once on the superb slopes the cold is forgotten and as well as the slopes around Stuben & St Anton, it is also worth skiing to the next chairlift and taking the ski bus to Lech, which departs every 20 mins (do not wait for a bus in Stuben itself, you could have a long wait in the cold!!!) Once in Lech this opens up the slopes of Lech, Oberlech, Zurs + Zug as well. The Ski circus route is worth taking for skiers who like to cover the miles. Overall a great skiing destination for intermediate skiers.
