Just be aware that this resorts is unashamedly aimed at the skier/boarder. There is some off-piste activity, but not a lot. Go there if you want to ski/ board, but if you're inclined to finish early or look for other things to do, maybe not there ideal resort for you! Very much a place for the 'first lift up, and last lift down' brigade!

ZAUCHENSEE THE RESORT

The ski holiday resort of Zauchensee offers complete ski-in, ski-out convenience with an altitude and location that ensures (for most of the winter) the resort is deep in snow. One of the few purpose built ski holiday resorts in Austria, Zauchensee is low rise and attractive and features some grand and attractive hotels. The ski lifts are well located making the resort essentially all ski-in, ski-out. There are a number of bars and small mountain huts dotted around the resort and the compact resort is easy to get around in the evening. There is little traffic in Zauchensee itself, those arriving on holiday in cars will almost certainly ski-in, ski-out of their accommodation, whilst day visitors mainly use the large car park at the edge of the Zauchensee.

ZAUCHENSEE RESORT INFORMATION

Zauchensee is undoubtedly pretty and compared to some French resorts it should be approaching UNESCO recognition. That said it is a purpose built resort and whilst immaculate, it does lack the quirkiness of older and more established Austrian resorts. Ski-in, ski-out and attractive it is but activities tend to be mainly hotel based meaning Zauchensee sees less people on the streets in the evening. Altenmarkt just down in the valley from Zauchensee offers a far more traditional Austrian village, with a central, pedestrianised square and a local population that really gives it an authentic feel.
