Lake Toya, Japan ski and snowboard holiday guide.
LAKE TOYA SKI HOLIDAYS
Lake Toya is a fantastically located resort in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The resort of Lake Toya is part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park and has a small ski area connected to the Windsor Hotel Toya Resort & Spa. The area features hot springs and views onto Mount Usu, one of Japan's most active volcanoes. The ski area at Lake Toya is compact but is readily accessed from the ski-in, ski-out hotel. In the area are the bigger ski holiday resorts of Niseko and Rusutsu, both are bigger and better known than the Lake Toya ski area. Daily buses reach both Niseko and Rusutsu in around half an hour so it is easy to combine the skiing at Niseko and Rusutsu with a stay / skiing at Lake Toya.
LAKE TOYA SKI HOLIDAY INFO
The Lake Toya ski area is compact and exclusively open to guests at the Windsor Hotel Toya Resort & Spa. As well as their own private ski area, guests have superb views onto the 43-kilometre diameter crater lake as well as Toya-ko-onsen Hot Spring. The ski area though is of limited size at Lake Toya, comprising of just a few runs, so more enthusiastic skiers and boarders would be advised to take advantage of the ski holiday resorts of Niseko and Rusutsu, both located within about 30 minutes of Lake Toya. Niseko has an international appeal, is a sizeable ski holiday destination and is famed for its powder skiing. Rusutsu is predominantly a family resort with a fair sized ski area of around 45 kilometres of piste spread over 3 mountains.
