SAPPORO SKI HOLIDAYS

Sapporo is the biggest and most prominent city in Hokkaido and although it is not a ski resort as such, it is steeped in Alpine tradition. It boasts many ski holiday resorts nearby and for guests wanting to stay in a city and explore the region of southern Hokkaido, then Sapporo is a fantastic option and area to base oneself. Host of past winter Olympics and annual ski jumping competitions, Sapporo has a strong Alpine legacy. The Sapporo Snow Festival is one of Japan's premier winter events – each year about 2m people visit Sapporo to witness the hundreds of incredible snow statues and ice sculptures in Odori Park, the grounds of Satoland, and the main street in Susukino. For those who like beer there is also the Sapporo beer factory tour to entertain.

The ski areas around Sapporo include Moiwa-yama and Makomanai, both small areas that are very close to Sapporo. Sapporo Kokusai is located around 1 hour from Sapporo and offers terrain best suited to beginners and intermediates. Kiroro is situated close to Sapporo and is good for advanced skiers and snowboarders although the top section is wind-prone. Rusutsu is some 90 minutes from Sapporo and offers a ski-in, ski-out ski holiday resort that is ideal for families whilst Niseko is around 2 and a half hours from Sapporo and offers some of the best skiing in Hokkaido. Niseko is famous for its powder snow accumulation and quality and has a real international feel to it. Niseko is also one of the bigger ski holiday resorts in Japan.
