ZERMATT SKIING
Zermatt offers the highest skiing in the Alps and unlike Chamonix (the nearest rival) the terrain is genuinely open to most levels. Glacier skiing in Zermatt ensures great snow reliability and there are 3 distinct sectors for skiing in Rothorn, Gornegrat and the Matterhorn glacier (although there are unique sectors beneath these areas as well). Additionally a ski pass covering the neighbouring Italian resort of Cervinia is available and skiers and boarders can make a day trip onto the Italian side of the Matterhorn. The runs back to the resort especially from the Rothorn – Sunnegga section give great access right back into the centre of Zermatt, although après ski huts line the route back and tempt many to stop with warning signs in descending metres.

ZERMATT SKI INFORMATION
The chief problem with the separate ski areas is the fact that to get between the Matterhorn Glacier area and the other Zermatt ski areas requires the skier or boarder to return to the valley to access the lifts back to the other ski areas. The new Furi – Riffelberg ski lift makes access easier but it is still way down close to Zermatt. Weather is another factor which can wreak havoc on the very top section of the Matterhorn Glacier and often cuts the link with Cervinia. Whilst the runs back to Zermatt from Rothorn – Sunnegal are convenient, they are not easy when crowded and further down become narrow tracks. The skiing above Zermatt in fact offers little comfort for novice skiers with the easy stuff to be found higher up.
