The resort itself provides adequate services in the evening, although don't expect the apres-ski scene to be anything close to Europe. Perfect for couples who like to roam round the shops after a day on the slopes and enjoy top quality food. The recent excellent exchange rate between £:$ ensures that prices remain reasonable.

VAIL SKI HOLIDAYS

With a good ski holiday resort height, top lift height and an impressive snow record, the large Vail ski area is ideally suited to intermediate skier and snowboarders. Vail is in fact one of the biggest ski areas in the US with three distinct ski areas all connected: Vail Front Side is located above the sprawling resort, Vail Back Bowls is over the ridge and further still from Vail is Blue Sky Basin. The main highway from Denver skirts Vail although some accommodation is located on the other side of the highway as well. Vail has a reputation of being popular (crowded at peaks times) and one of the more expensive ski holiday resorts in the US. The highway can make transfers to Vail easy but can also take from the atmosphere in areas of the resort close to the highway.

THE GOOD, THE BAD

Good  We like:

Bad  We don`t like:
Crowded at times and expensive

VAIL SKI HOLIDAY INFO

The three Vail ski sectors form three separate faces that are connected by ridges and it is possible to ski or board a good distance out of Vail. Trees cover much of the Vail Front Side and Blue Sky Basin but the Vail Back Bowls sector has far less tree cover. Ski lifts leave from 3 main points of Vail as well as one from the outlying area of Cascade Village. Intermediates are best catered for in the Vail ski region with Vail Front Side offering the best and most extensive skiing in Vail, whilst the Blue Sky Basin offers some interesting terrain. Experts are best to head for the Vail Back Bowls or the tree routes of Blue Sky Basin. Beginners are best suited to the slopes just above the Vail.

The ski lift system

Excellent wide ranging terrain which even in the week before Xmas was completely empty. No queues, exceptionally groomed piste runs and good off piste to assist the intermediates on their first steps off-piste. Mountain restaurant (Deer Lodge the best) were adequate by a bit too much like canteen food. Dos Amigos at the bottom of the Vista Bahn provided the perfect location for lunch and a spot in the sun.

Snow conditions are always excellent and you have to be very unlucky not to have fresh snow at least twice during any given week.

Not too sure about kids facilities but as it is N. America you would expect nothing but the very best.

See comments above for apres-ski. A few bars are lively and do provide good music but the reason everyone goes to Vail is the slopes and not the apres-ski.
